Cold drinks, sunshine and goals - a perfect Saturday!

The Mill was submerged in the September sunshine this Saturday afternoon as Torpoint drew against divisional rivals Axminster Town.

After a delayed kick off due to a clash of colours - the fully gold strip of Torpoint and the black and yellow colours of Axminster - the visitors were forced into a change of strip, to their training shirt. Then a minutes applause was held to pay respect to the valued members of the Torpoint AFC who have sadly passed away in recent months before Curtis Damerell got the game underway.

The opening ten minutes saw the game turn scrappy at times, with the referee called into play on multiple occasions. A free kick after nine minutes, struck by Paul Heveren, flew narrowly wide of the goal. Eleven minutes in however, the Point found themselves ahead - a half volley from 10 yards found it’s way into the bottom right corner, courtesy of Curtis Damerell.

About 10 minutes later, a failed Axminster clearance meant the ball fell to striker Ryan Richards on the edge of the penalty area, however his strike from 18 yards whistled over the bar. The boys in gold and black had a goal dissallowed after 22 minutes, due to the referee awarding a controversial free kick to Axminster, for a controversial high foot against Curtis Damerell.

Axminster showed their first glimpses of attacking threat halfway through the first half; an attack down the right flank forcing a save from the Point keeper. However, with not long left before the half time whistle was to be blown by the referee - a long range effort from nestled into the bottom left corner from danger man Josh Wadhams. That one goal, was swiftly made 2, as Charlie Wilson runs through on goal - one on one with Jason Peters - before slotting it home to put the Tigers ahead.

A period of dominance from Axminster, well and truly taken advantage of. 40 minutes on the clock and a quick attack down the right wing from the visitors slotted expertly into the top right corner by playmaker Charlie Wilson for his second of the afternoon. On the brink of the half time whistle, a cross from Callum Thompson was headed home by Callum Holder, a much needed goal for Torpoint as half time came, with the score being, The Point 2-3 The Tigers.

Seven minutes after the restart, captain John Heveran got onto the end off a searching cross, unfortunately the ball went inches over the bar. However on the hour mark, an Axminster man exploits a gap in the Torpoint defence and Charlie Wilson claims his hat trick, putting the tigers two goals to the good - and giving the visitors a 2 goal advantage. Ryan Richards had a goal dissallowed shortly after for hand ball, which would’ve given the Point a lifeline, instead the score remained 4-2.

With 25 minutes left on the clock; Curtis Damerell scored a goal of the season contender to get the boys in gold back into the game. A superb volley, with his back to goal, the striker turned and sent the ball looping over the away sides keeper. A shot hit with sheer class to make it 4-3. And then it was 4… the Axminster keeper parries an initial effort from Gary Hird straight into the path of the incoming Callum Thompson - an early Christmas present from The Tigers keeper. With 20 minutes left, it was anyone’s game - but the momentum was well and truly with the home side.

Damerell continued to be nuisance, with an overhead kick on the 75th minute clattering against the right post - as the men from Cornwall continued to look for a winner in the blistering sunshine.

And that was the last real chance for either side in the game. Our unbeaten run has been maintained, but we were ever so close to claiming all three. A truly superb advert for non - league football!
