TAFC Committee 2023/24

Max Greenham12 Jul 2023 - 18:05

The latest news from the AGM

On Monday 10th July, we held our annual general meeting which saw the committee for 2023/24 confirmed.

Chairman, Bill Booth, had this to say on reflection of the 2022/23 season;

"The 1st season with Torpoint AFC being represented at Step 5 Western League level with the team progressively growing in confidence through the season to finish in a creditable position. Outside of this the ECPL team again brought home silverware, winning the League Cup. The re-structuring of the Cornish Leagues will see both 2nd and 3rd teams playing in St Piran’s leagues in the coming season. A significant challenge facing the club over the close season has been recruiting new managers for the 3rd and 4th teams, with the lack of candidates leading to the demise of the P&D team, which is extremely regrettable.

The 2022-23 season saw us setting unprecedented targets for improving the facilities in The Mill, with two major projects namely upgrading the halogen floodlights to an LED system and the installation of a PVC Pitch Surround. These projects have both been achieved with considerable financial investment from the club, notwithstanding the support of FA Grants, and massive dedication and drive by the Committee to make these happen. The Mill is a much-improved environment for spectators due to these efforts. Targets for the coming season include improvements to the changing rooms, kitchen ventilation and progressively working to implement the tasks in our Plan of Works programme. A recent initiative has seen us tap into the HMS Raleigh Community Support programme whereby trainees between courses on holdover are employed in local community projects. We have successful employed teams twice in June 23 to achieve a vast amount of work in a short period. The aim is to continue this relationship on a regular basis which should prove invaluable to the grounds team and wider club in enhancing our facility.

Social Club function bookings have maintained at a steady level, which is encouraging against the backdrop of the ongoing ‘cost of living’ crisis. The World Cup was a real success on which we should aim to build for the Euro’s 24. The Gourmet Box supported us throughout the tournament providing catering from the car park. Lee Jezard has since moved indoors to provide matchday food and evolved to become the prime caterer for the club. A real success was the achievement of a 5* Food Hygiene Certificate for Torpoint AFC and the Gourmet Box, the intent is to build on this and steadily build on the current baseline of social bookings. The kitchen has also improved markedly since the last report with new flooring, decorating and new appliances.

The commercial income from advertising and sponsorship, including team sponsorship, continue to be a success and consistently attaining levels around 3 times that of pre-Covid times. Dicky Bays efforts in liaising with local business has played a play a significant role towards this. The aim is to continue this whilst developing and improving the Match Day Sponsorship programme in the coming season.

A Memorial Day was held at The Mill in April in recognition of the tragic loss of Kyran Carney. His parents Justin and Amanda led on the pre-planning of the event but the hard work of the staff and Committee of Torpoint AFC contributed massively to the gargantuan achievement of raising £7,200 for their chosen charities. Torpoint AFC donated our £1,200 allocation back to into the pot and this was subsequently distributed to the nominated charities. This was not only the right thing to do but was recognised by the Torpoint wider population and aptly demonstrated our community credentials.

Unfortunately, we lost Megan Morris from the Committee mid-season but have been boosted over recent months with Mark Waterfield, Max Greenham, Lee Jezard and Gareth Glanfield joining the Committee, which undoubtedly strengthens the squad!

As we start another season our goals are enduring; success on the pitch for our teams and off the pitch for the social club, sustainability and to perpetually improve our facilities. We also aim to embed Torpoint AFC at the core of the local community. Torpoint AFC is a proper football club with a special feel. This is only achieved by the unceasing efforts of the volunteers and staff that keep the club running and create the right environment. Your efforts are immense! Everything you do be it upfront and visible, or behind the scenes, is important and massively appreciated. Thank you all!"
