Torpoint won 5-4 on penalties

Torpoint Athletic are through to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, as they overcome a stubborn SWPL Premier East outfit Middlezoy Rovers in a penalty shoot out, with Torpoint’s Dave Barker scoring the winning penalty. This was also the first time, the hosts have won a penalty a shoot out in the FA Vase.
In the third minute Torpoint made their intentions known when Adam Carter played in Ryan Richards, his shot from inside the area was well saved by visiting keeper Ollie Murray, who made a great diving save.
Seven minutes later Connor Cussans for the visitors had a low effort from distance well saved by home keeper James Morley.
Just past the quarter hour mark, Richards crossed the into the area which was found by Carter, his effort was well saved by Murray.
Just before the half hour mark, good build up play by the visiting midfield released Theo Worth, his low effort went just wide.
With two minutes remaining of the first period, a Tom Payne corner for the hosts was found in the area by Callum O’Brien, his header towards goal was well saved by a point blank save. Then moments later at the other end of the pitch, Worth had a shot on the edge area, which just wide of the post.
Eight minutes into the second half, Owen Haslam for the hosts puts the ball through to Richards, his low effort is well saved by Murray. Moments later a Payne corner is found by Hepworth, his effort is somehow cleared off the line by Murray with another great save by the Middlezoy keeper. Then in another corner as the hosts were trying to find a way through, O’Brien has his header rebound off the crossbar.
Just before the hour mark and to the shock of the hosts, on the counter attack the visitors take the lead when good build up play finds Dan Lismore, he races clear and fires home past Morley from 10 yards.
Fifthteen minutes later, the hosts equalise when Joe Rapson crosses the ball into the area which clips a defender into the path of Richards who fires home past Murray from 8 yards.
With ten minutes remaining, James Rowe for the hosts has a shot in the area, which is put round the post by the keeper in another fantastic save.
In the final minute as the hosts were looking for the winner, Darren Hicks puts through Gary Hird who cuts into the area and finds Rapson, his effort is well stop by Murray, the scores where level at full time, so to the dreaded to penalty shoot out.
Middlzoy went first, Jack Prowse effort was well saved by Morley, Darren Hicks fired his home, so did Ryan Richards, Elliot Crawford and Joe Rapson. Theo Worth, Finn Hansford, Harry Hamblin and Rhys Hayward fired their penalties home for the visitors. Up stepped Torpoint’s Joe Pearson, knowing if he scored he would put Torpoint through, his effort went over the bar, it was time for sudden death. Riley Willis stepped up for Middlezoy, his penalty was well saved by Morley. Then it was Dave Barker’s turn, he blasted home past Murray to put Torpoint through 5-4 on penalties in front of the jubilant home fans.
Torpoint now face Bovey Tracey from the SWPL Premier East in the 2nd Qualifying Round at The Mill on Saturday 20th September.
