The Tamar crossings derby, Ashes vs Point, Saltash vs Torpoint. Whichever way you want to say it, this fixture has always been a good encounter. In recent years, Saltash have seemed to have the edge over Torpoint - winning all 5(!) encounters last term although they were closer games than it seems.
Saltash United were promoted to the Toolstation Western League after the second Covid-struck season in 2020/21 after being in the top 3 for PPG in the SWPL East division over the two abandoned seasons, after being part of the SWPL since the 2007/08 season. This season is their third season in the Toolstation Western League after they finished runners-up last time out behind fellow Cornishmen, Mousehole AFC.
However, it has been all change this season as Macca Brown took over in the dugout following his resignation from Millbrook AFC. Macca has been able to bring across the majority of his Millbrook squad and coaching staff after the vast majority of the Saltash set-up left the club in the summer, including our number 1, Jordan Duffey.
This term, the Ashes have struggled to get going after losing their first 6 games before beating Radstock Town in the FA Vase by six goals to nil, since then, United have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 in all competitions.
Point will be looking to make it 4 wins from the last 4 games on Saturday and hoping to break the losing streak vs United after an impressive 1-0 vs a strong Wadebridge Town outfit last week in the FA Vase which saw Ryan Richards on the scoresheet again and a 4th clean sheet of the season for Duffey and his defensive unit.
Last meeting: Saltash United 5-2 Torpoint AFC (31st January 2023, LPC)
